Calculating age seems simple—subtract the birth year from the current year—but the accurate answer requires accounting for whether the birthday has occurred yet this year, the number of days in each month, and leap years. Our Age Calculator handles all of this automatically.
How Exact Age Is Calculated
Exact age = (Today's date) − (Birth date)
Steps:
1. Subtract the birth year from the current year.
2. If the birthday has not yet occurred this calendar year, subtract 1 from the years.
3. Calculate remaining months and days.
Example: Born March 15, 1990. Today is August 10, 2025.
• Years: 2025 − 1990 = 35. Birthday (March 15) has passed → 35 years.
• Months: March to August = 4 months (Mar 15 → Aug 10 is not a full 5 months)
• Days: 15 days to complete August 10
• Age: 35 years, 4 months, 26 days
Leap Years and February 29 Birthdays
A leap year has 366 days; February has 29 days. People born on February 29 celebrate birthdays officially on February 28 or March 1 in non-leap years, depending on jurisdiction. Our calculator treats February 28 as the legal birthday in non-leap years.
