Sales Tax and Tip Calculations Made Easy
4 min read
Sales tax and gratuity calculations come up dozens of times a week. Understanding the simple math behind them saves embarrassment at the register and ensures you tip fairly.
How Sales Tax Works
Sales tax is a percentage added to the pre-tax price by the seller and remitted to the government.
Total = Pre-tax price × (1 + Tax Rate)
Example: A $45 item in a state with 8% sales tax.
Total = 45 × 1.08 = $48.60
Sales tax rates vary by state, county, and city. Some goods (groceries, prescription drugs) are exempt in certain jurisdictions.
Calculating Tips
Tip Amount = Bill × Tip Percentage
Total = Bill + Tip Amount
Quick mental math shortcuts:
• 10% tip: Move the decimal left one place. On $47.50, that is $4.75.
• 15% tip: Take 10% and add half of it. $4.75 + $2.38 = $7.13.
• 20% tip: Double the 10% figure. $4.75 × 2 = $9.50.
Tip on pre-tax amount: It is correct to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though tipping on the full bill is also widely practiced.
Splitting Bills
Total Per Person = (Bill + Tip) ÷ Number of People
For unequal splits (one person had more expensive items), use our Tip Calculator to enter individual amounts and let each person pay their fair share plus tip.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it rude to tip below 15%?
In the US, 15% is generally considered the minimum for acceptable service. 18–20% is standard; 25%+ is for exceptional service. Tipping customs vary significantly by country.
Does sales tax apply to shipping?
This depends on the state and whether the item itself is taxable. Some states tax shipping when it is part of a taxable sale; others do not. Check your local regulations or the retailer's policy.
